Sydney is, of course, our favourite Aussie city but sometimes it’s nice to take a break from the big smoke for a little getaway.
What some international visitors may not be aware of, is that there are a range of trips from Sydney relatively close to the city that showcase some of the diverse landscapes and culture that Australia has to offer. And staying in a location overnight is a great way to immerse yourself more in a destination for some uniquely Aussie experiences at a more leisurely pace than may be possible on a day tour.
Just some of the benefits: witnessing our beautiful wildlife in their natural habitat at dusk and dawn, more flexibility for optional activities like a serene early morning kayak or an exhilarating swim with dolphins, witnessing magnificent Aussie sunrises and sunsets, and local foodie experiences like trying fresh oysters at local farms and craft beer tastings at distilleries. And luxury accommodation options like glamping in the Aussie bush under clear, starry skies.
Your Sydney Guide offers a range of private day tours from Sydney which you can combine for the perfect overnight getaway from Sydney. Tailored to your requirements and tastes, you’ll be the only ones on your tour, with your very own expert guide to lead you and drive you in luxurious comfort. One-to-three night tours are on offer with a range of luxury accommodation available, and we’ll take care of that and everything else for your getaway in consultation with you. Contact us for more details.
Here are our recommendations for some of the best overnight getaways from Sydney, including all the exciting features of our tours.
Features: Stunning coastal vistas on the Grand Pacific Drive, secluded beaches, ancient forests, majestic waterfalls, bushwalking, swimming, snorkelling, sea kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, beach walks, whale watching, dusk and dawn wildlife safari, Symbio Wildlife Park to see native animals, Aboriginal rock art, Aboriginal cultural immersive experience, treetop walks, luxury accommodation, gourmet foodie experiences, wineries, charming towns, shopping and more.
The South Coast of New South Wales is often a gem that remains hidden for international visitors who may not know of this stunning region beginning virtually on Sydney’s doorstep. Hence, it has the benefit of being less populated by tourists.
With its spectacular coastlines, lush bushlands and rainforests, pristine beaches, cascading waterfalls, verdant rolling hills, quaint villages, quality vineyards and a wealth of activities to enjoy, it’s a treasure trove truly worth discovering.
Begin your epic South Coast sojourn just 40 minutes from Sydney in the beautiful Royal National Park, Australia’s oldest national park. You’ll experience the beautiful Wattamolla Beach, the famous Figure 8 Pool, Wedding Cake Rock, swim in epic freshwater waterholes below waterfalls, and have a breathtaking walk along towering sandstone escarpments and through pristine rainforest, taking in panoramic views down the South Coast.
Continue down the coast on the scenic Grand Pacific Drive, via the iconic 665-metre-long Sea Cliff Bridge, and into the hinterland of the picturesque Southern Highlands. Here, you’ll enjoy exceptional local produce, wine tastings and behind-the-scenes wine making tours at cool climate vineyards, and charming towns like Berry, Berrima, Bowral, Robertson and Moss Vale, and some shopping stops too as you explore this historic region. Verdant, rolling hills and stunning scenery abound, with the majestic Kangaroo Valley and Fitzroy Falls just some of the many highlights.
Then, head back to the coast to the Jervis Bay region for some stunning wilderness experiences like walks on pristine beaches and through lush rainforests in Booderee National Park for a spot of whale watching.
When it comes to experiencing our beautiful wildlife, a visit to Symbio Wildlife Park will see you get up close and personal with koalas, kangaroos, wombats and many other Australian native animals.
But if you’d rather discover our unique wildlife in their natural habitat, an overnight getaway means a much better chance to do so when animals are especially out and about at dusk and dawn. We can take you, for example, on a dusk safari to search for kangaroos and wombats, offering unique Australian animal encounters. Even en route between locations, such as the drive between the Southern Highlands and Jervis Bay, offers more opportunities to see wildlife as unlike day tour itineraries, there’s the flexibility to pass through these areas at dusk.
Soak up the local atmosphere and environment with several luxury accommodation options available, from boutique hotels and farm stays in the Southern Highlands, to glamping in deluxe safari tents under clear bush skies at Paperbark Camp in Jervis Bay for a quintessential Aussie experience. Or perhaps your family might like a more traditional, rustic camping experience but without all the logistical fuss. We’ll scout the perfect location, pitch the tents and provide locally sourced gourmet food.
Indeed, there’s no shortage of foodie and beverage experiences on offer on Sydney’s South Coast. A small taste: immersive Aboriginal food experiences, treetop dining at Paperbark Camp, oyster tastings, farm gate experiences, fine cuisine at wineries, a catered gourmet picnic on a secluded beach, and tastings of wines, craft beers and spirits.
Features: Wine tasting in one of Australia’s premier wine regions near Sydney, sunrise hot air ballooning, helicopter ride, bike riding, golf, pristine beaches, sand dune quad biking, sandboarding, sunset camel rides on the beach, 4WDing, wildlife safari, swimming with wild dolphins, whale watching, surfing, laser clay pigeon shooting, spa treatments, luxury accommodation, gourmet foodie experiences, charming towns, shopping and more.
Set off over the Sydney Harbour Bridge and head 2.5 hours north via the stunning Hawkesbury River to the Hunter Valley, one of Australia’s premier wine regions and the oldest in the country. With a relaxed vibe, the Hunter Valley is home to over 150 wineries, as well as local gin and beer producers. On our winery tours, we can tailor your visit so that you can nominate the distilleries and wineries you’d like to visit based on your tastes in wines. And we can introduce you to classic, larger wine makers, innovative creatives, smaller growers, and bio-dynamic producers too.
Fine wines need fine food to accompany them, and the Hunter Valley offers gourmet cuisine made with the freshest, locally sourced ingredients which you’ll get much more of a flavour for with more time spent in the region. Enjoy fine cuisine amidst scenic surrounds at iconic restaurants, a private picnic among the vines, a farm gate experience to taste local produce, or a casual pub feed among the many foodie options to choose from.
Take advantage of an overnight stay with a sunrise hot air balloon adventure or helicopter ride above this spectacular region. And your stay will allow more time for other activities like gentle bicycle rides between wineries, pulse-raising laser clay pigeon shooting, golfing, or taking a breather with a refreshing lux beauty treatment.
From lush vineyards to stunning coastline in under 90 minutes is the idyllic Port Stephens, famous for its sparkling beaches, sand dunes, aquatic life, laid-back lifestyle, and family-focussed activities.
Take to the sand with a thrilling quad bike or sandboard ride on Stockton Beach’s iconic sand dunes, have a sunset camel ride on the beach (yes, we have camels too!), or go for a gentle stroll on your choice of 26 beaches. Walk the spectacular Tomaree Head Summit at dusk or dawn and lookout for wildlife like koalas and whales. Whale watching tours are also available, and for something truly special, have a swimming with wild dolphins experience (Port Stephens is the only place in Sydney’s home state of New South Wales where it’s permitted to swim with wild dolphins). With an early morning start for this, an overnight stay is ideal.
Lux accommodation options include winery and farm stays, boutique hotels, Airbnbs, glamping, resorts, retreats, and beachside stays.

You may also like to choose your own adventure with a different combination, for example, go west to the Blue Mountains for a night and then south for a stay in the Southern Highlands. And you can also opt to stay a few nights in the same region to experience it at its fullest. So feel free to contact us for available options. We’re looking forward to seeing you in Sydney and showing you Sydney’s great beyond!
